Winter tire rating 2021 for crossovers and SUVs
Contents:
Instead of taking for granted the tire manufacturers' laudatory statements about their products, BestRated's editors have compiled rating of winter tires for crossovers and SUVs of the season 2021-2022, focusing on their own experience, reviews of Russian motorists, as well as road tests of the magazines "Autoreview" and "Behind the Wheel".
Updated rating of winter tires for crossovers 2022/2023.
• Their pilots have tested a variety of studded and non-studded tires for hydroplaning resistance in the wet; braking and handling on dry roads; comfort and quietness; handling during extreme maneuvers on different "black" and "white" road surfaces.

• The top 10 winter tires for crossovers and SUVs are opened by soft rubber with a directional symmetrical tread. Its blocks have a V-shaped pattern, while the lamellas are made in the shape of the letter A – for better grip on the snow surface.
• And the diagonal grooves of River Grooves are shaped like river bends – this is how the manufacturer tried to optimize the drainage of water, slush and mud.
• The reinforced carcass construction of these tires was designed with massive vehicles with a high center of gravity in mind. This provides the Grandtrek Ice03 with high load capacity and endurance, even in extremely cold conditions.
• According to customer reviews, this tire confidently scoops out of snowdrifts, feels stable on an icy road, and does not “scour” when changing lanes on the track in a snowfall. But snow porridge, which is often found on the roads of Moscow and other large cities due to the use of reagents, is not her strong point, the Grandtrek Ice03 is poorly controlled and slows down in it.
Pros and cons high wear resistance and strength of the spikes feels good on loose and rolled snow good stability in skidding quite quiet slows down in snow porridge for a long time9. Continental IceContact 2 SUV
- Diameter: R15, R16, R17, R18, R19, R20, R21

• Compared to the first generation IceContact, the second model received 25% lighter studs with rectangular carbide inserts, and there were more of them (190 pieces).
• The pattern of the outer part of the tread has also changed – blocks with differently arranged lamellae have become larger. And in the inner side of the tread, more gripping edges appeared.
• Between the blocks, at the very edge of the tread, there are transverse drainage grooves. Their large depth and width allow the tire to confidently go on snow-covered roads.
Pros and cons holds the car well on snow and ice perfectly balanced durable spikes slows down well on wet pavement high price noisy on dry pavement8. Bridgestone Blizzak Spike-02 SUV

- winter tires with studs
• These crossover tires have been designed with the cold winters in northern Europe in mind. Their feature is a multifaceted stud with a carbide insert and an increased edge length. According to the manufacturer, such spikes provide the tire with confident movement on ice.
• Thanks to the V-shaped tread pattern and numerous gripping edges, the “Japanese” walks and maneuvers stably and predictably on snowy and icy surfaces.
• You can’t call this rubber quiet, but for a short braking distance on snow and ice, this drawback can be forgiven.
Pros and cons Retains elasticity in severe frost Accelerates and brakes well on snow and ice Afraid of hydroplaning Strong studs, do not fly out Noisy Sensitive to rutting7Gislaved Nord Frost 200 SUV
- Diameter: R15, R16, R17, R18, R19, R20

• According to Za Rulem experts, these are the best tires for driving around the city, whose streets are cleared of snow and ice. They will be the best choice for the "southern" winter. In snow acceleration tests and wet braking tests, the Nord Frost 200 SUV showed the best results.
• But do not think that this rubber is suitable only for asphalt. It has excellent lateral grip on ice and brakes well on snowy roads.
• The pilots of "Za Rulem" noted the average results of this model in aggressive driving on snow, there are also minor comments on directional stability and cross-country ability.
Pros and cons fast braking on dry and wet pavement ideal for quiet driving on snow and ice best choice for extreme maneuvers on snow6. Yokohama IceGuard IG65
- Diameter: R16, R17, R18, R19, R20, R21, R22

- Maximum speed index: T (up to 190 km/h)
- RunFlat technology: no
- Seal technology: no
- winter tires with studs
- type of winter tires: for northern winter
- thorns
- directional protector
• On loose, rolled snow and slush, these tires feel "like a fish in water." By the way, they also don’t care about water, they accelerate and brake on wet pavement excellently, judging by the tests “Behind the Wheel”.
• On ice, the situation is worse, and the brakes and lateral grip are average. In addition, the handling on ice of the IceGuard IG65 is not the best in the rating, so it’s not worth driving a car “shod” in such tires on ice.
• Not all Russian drivers agree with the editorial "Behind the Wheel", many IceGuard IG65 owners praise it just for its behavior on ice, including on icy conditions, when the road is "like glass".
Pros and cons high cross-country ability in snow quickly slows down on snow and wet asphalt soft durable spikes noisy on asphalt5 Nordman 7 SUV
- Diameter: R15, R16, R17, R18, R20

• This tire has fewer studs than the “big sister” Nokian Tires Hakkapeliitta 9 (110 pieces against 194 pieces, respectively), therefore the grip on bare ice of the Nordman 7 SUV is worse.
• But in terms of acceleration on snow, tires take first place, they are distinguished by good cross-country ability and controllability, according to the experts of "Behind the Wheel".
• Russian car owners praise this tire for strong spikes that do not fly out even on asphalt, low noise for studded tires, and understandable handling on dry pavement.

• In the test of winter tires for SUVs and passenger cars from Autoreview, the “Koreans” turned out to be the best in deep loose snow (10 points in terms of ease of handling and first place in the speed of passing a winding snowy track).
• According to Autoreview experts, such a good result can be explained by the increased length of the engagement edges in the longitudinal and transverse directions.
• Another good thing about Hankook studded tires is the durability of the studs. Even when operating the car “both in the tail and in the mane,” as one of the drivers put it, the spikes remain in place.
• All in all, the Winter i*Pike RS2 is an inexpensive all-rounder that can handle snow, ice, and water. That's just on the pavement does not slow down too quickly.
Pros and consoptimum price/quality ratiostrong studsgoes well on slush, ice and puddlesmediocre braking on asphalt3. Continental IceContact 3
- Seasonality: winter

• The top three winter tires for jeeps and crossovers are opened by the third generation of popular tires. It acquired a directional tread pattern (this improved handling on melted snow and slush), and wide grooves that effectively drain water. And so that the tire is less hardened in the cold and softer, rapeseed oil was added to the rubber compound.
• Double studding allows IceContact 3 to accelerate and brake confidently on snowy and icy roads, and also improves longitudinal grip.
• In their reviews of this model, Russian users note that IceContact 3 behaves predictably on all types of winter surfaces. However, at positive temperatures, yaw appears in the rut. Another common problem with these tires is studs flying out.
Pros and cons behaves predictably on an icy track, on loose and packed snow good flotation on snow and ice excellent lateral grip on ice season can fly out a lot of spikes noisy2. Nokian Tires Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV
- Diameter: R16, R17, R18, R19, R20, R21, R22

- RunFlat technology: yes
- Seal technology: no
- winter tires with studs
- type of winter tires: for northern winter
- tread pattern type: symmetrical
- directional protector
• The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 studded tires are one of the best winter tires for crossovers. The unique design of the spikes (there are two types of them) allows you to literally bite into the ice and packed snow.
• The spikes in the center are responsible for acceleration and braking, and the side spikes are for handling in corners. But the total number of spikes compared to the 8th model has decreased from 190 to 172 pieces.
• According to the results of tests "Behind the Wheel", these tires do an excellent job with extreme winter conditions. They have the best longitudinal grip on ice, clear handling and a clear course on a snowy road. At the same time, ordinary users note that even driving on clear ice is felt on the Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV like on a normal road.
• Perhaps the only drawback of these tires is that they perform worse on pavement than on snowy and icy roads. However, in extreme winter conditions, it is almost impossible to find something better (except for the first place in the rating).
Pros and cons studding with two types of studs excellent handling on snow and ice high wear resistance due to the improved composition of the rubber compound does not tan in frost noise high price "walks" a little on asphalt1. MICHELIN X-Ice North 4 SUV
- Diameter: R16, R17, R18, R19, R20, R21, R22

- RunFlat technology: no
- Seal technology: no
- winter tires with studs
- type of winter tires: for northern winter
- tread pattern type: symmetrical
- directional protector
• The best winter tires for SUVs according to the editors of Autoreview. The element of these tires is ice, on it they are the leader in the length of the braking distance. On the snow, they behave a little worse, losing the handling championship to the Hankook Winter i*Pike X.
• The difference between this model and other premium winter tires is a huge number of studs. For example, a tire with a dimension of 225/60 R18 has 287 of them. Most of all (316 "teeth") – for tires 285/45 R22.
• But where you shouldn’t drive on X-Ice North 4 SUV tires is on wet pavement, on this surface they have mediocre grip.
Pros and cons Excellent handling on ice and snowRating of winter non-studded tires for crossovers and jeeps 2021

- RunFlat technology: no
- Silent Tire Technology: No
- Seal technology: no
- winter tires without studs
• These tires are very soft, which is good for comfort, but affects handling at high speeds. However, if you are going to operate the car in a quiet mode, then the Kormoran SUV Snow is an excellent choice. There are three main advantages of this model:
- confident behavior in snowdrifts and on packed snow. With these tires, the car corners predictably on a snow-covered track, and goes well on a snow-covered slope.
- They hold the road well on wet pavement, but the braking distance is long.
- They do not prowl on the snowy porridge.
• On ice, Kormoran SUV Snow can slip during emergency braking, and slow down for a long time. However, this is the problem with most Velcro, including expensive ones.

• The test of winter studded tires for crossovers and SUVs involved 14 sets of specialized SUV winter tires and regular winter tires for front-wheel drive cars.
• Snow and ice tests for studded tires took place at the Polar White Hell, owned by Nokian Tires. Tests on asphalt – at the Nokian summer training ground near the town of Nokia. For measurements, the Vbox Racelogic measuring complex and the Kistler Correvit L‑motion optical system were used.
• The test car was a front-wheel-drive VW Tiguan, as all-wheel drive models erase small differences between tires.
•
• Non-studded tires were tested at two test sites – the Finnish Technotrac and the Russian AVTOVAZ test site in Tolyatti. The test car is a Skoda Octavia.
• Za Rulem experts evaluated the longitudinal grip of the tires and their handling on ice, snow flotation, measured the time it took to pass the ice circle, studied the acceleration and braking of cars with different tires on snow, and also took into account the “behavior” of tires when changing lanes and driving on wet and dry asphalt.
