September 2, 2011 marks the 200th anniversary of the decree of King Frederick VI to establish a university in Norway. This decision was preceded by a century and a half of the struggle of the Norwegians for their own university - but in 1661, in the 1760s and 1770s in 1793-95, their demands were rejected. When King Frederick VI gave his consent in September 1811, the exact location of the university had not yet been determined.
