Since January 1, 2002, the European currency - the euro - has been put into circulation - equal to 100 eurocents, since 1999 it has been a legal tender. The European Central Bank became the issuing bank. Euro cash replaced the national currencies of 17 EU countries: Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, Cyprus, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Finland, France and Estonia. In addition, the Euro zone includes the Azores, Andorra, Balearic Islands, Vatican, Madeira Islands, Monaco, San Marino, as well as the autonomous region of Kosovo. Coin production began in May 1998 in all EU countries. By January 1, 2002, about 50 billion coins of various denominations were issued.
In the countries of the European Union, coins are circulated in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents, 1, 2 euros. The obverse of the coins, on which the denomination is indicated, is the same for all countries, the only difference is in the reverse. In 1997, the winner of the competition for the design of euro coins was a version of the artist of the Royal Belgian Mint, Luc Lux, which reflects the unity of the countries of the European Community.
The common obverse for all coins presents the map of the European Community against the background of transverse stripes with the stars of the European flag. Coins of 1, 2, 5 cents indicate the place of Europe in the world; while the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins represent Europe as the United Nations. The 1 and 2 euro coins represent Europe without borders.
