THIRD SERIES.
With a portrait of Benedict XVI, 265th Pope (since April 19, 2005), published annually since April 2006.
Before the release of this series, Vatican Coins had never been a real means of tender; their sale to collectors brought a substantial income to the papal state. So, the value of the coins was almost ten times their face value. At the insistence of the European Commission, the Vatican signed an agreement with the EU on December 17, 2009, under which it pledged to put into real circulation at least 51% of the coins of its minting. So far, however, not all denominations have been put into circulation, but only a coin of 50 cents. It can be used to pay for purchases in a supermarket, at the post office and at a Vatican gas station, however, cashiers of enterprises in the territory of the city-state are allowed to give no more than two coins for change per person.
