Zambian kwacha is the currency of the Republic of Zambia. 1 kwacha is sibdivided into 100 ngwee. Kwacha has been the currency of Zambia since 1968, when it replaced the Zambian pound (exchange rate: 1 pound = 2 kwachi). Kwacha means "freedom" in one of the local dialects.

In January 2013, the Zambian government carried out a denomination of the national currency, reducing the denomination of banknotes by 1000 times. New Banknotes in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 kvac were introduced into circulation. The format and pattern on the banknotes correspond to the denominated banknotes, however, the color scheme of the new banknotes is slightly different from the previous series. 2012 is indicated on all banknotes of the new series. The protection of banknotes against counterfeiting has also been improved by increasing the security features of the new series. All Banknotes are paper-based. In February 2016, updated Banknotes of the 2012 series were issued with improved means of determining the denomination for visually impaired people. The year on banknotes is 2015.
