From April 29, 2015, the Bank of the Republic of Burundi has put into circulation new banknotes in denominations of 500, 2000, 5000 and 10000 francs. The new design banknotes will become smaller in size than the old design banknotes, but the degree of protection will increase. Old-style 10, 20, 50 and 100 franc banknotes will be removed from circulation and replaced with coins of the same denomination.
