Pataka is the monetary unit of the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Consists of 100 avos. The monetary policy of the district is carried out by the Macau Department of Monetary Circulation.

The word "pataca" comes from the name of the silver Coin, which was previously widespread in Asia - the Mexican Peso (eight reales), known in the Portuguese language as pataca mexicana.

After the transfer of Macau to China (since December 19, 1999), the Macau Monetary Department (a subdivision of the district administration) was created.

Since October 16, 1995, on the basis of an agreement between the overseas bank and Banko da China (Macau), the latter also received the right to issue patakas. Accordingly, in Macau, two banks of patakas of different designs and sizes are running in parallel. Issuing banks: Bank of China and Ultramarino National Bank. The Patakas of the Ultramarine Bank are printed in the Netherlands. They have the same design, bright colors. The obverse of each banknote depicts the Bank building in Macau. The inscriptions are in Chinese (traditional characters) and Portuguese. Bank of China patakas are reportedly printed in Hong Kong. On the reverse side of each banknote of each series - the skyscraper of the Bank of China in Macau.

In fact, patacas make up only 25-30% of the cash in Macau, most of the money supply in circulation is Hong Kong dollars (their ratio to patacas is 1 dollar to 1,03 patacas). Even in the famous Macau casinos, the basic unit is the Hong Kong dollar. And the "one-armed bandits" do not accept Patakas in any, only Hong Kong dollars.

The Patakas of the Ultramarine Bank are printed in the Netherlands. They have the same design, bright colors. The obverse of each banknote depicts the Bank building in Macau. The inscriptions are in Chinese (traditional characters) and Portuguese.
