Banknotes of the FARE ISLANDS - a catalog of coins of different countries: modern coins and banknotes of all countries of the world, samples, gold and silver coins, photographs and description.
The Faroe koruna is the currency of the Faroe Islands, divisible by 100 oira. Issued by the National Bank of Denmark. It is not a separate currency and is tied to the Danish krone; Danish banknotes are also circulating in the country along with Faroese banknotes.
On 12 April 1949, the Faroese krone was separated from the pound sterling and was attached to the Danish krone at an equal rate. This agreement is still in force. Although the Faroese Banknotes were issued “on behalf of the National Bank of Denmark,” the National Bank of Denmark does not claim any rights to Faroese banknotes issued before 1951.
Danish crowns are exchanged for Faroese crowns and vice versa by the National Bank of Denmark free of charge. Although regular Danish banknotes are no longer the legal tender in the Faroe Islands, they are accepted almost everywhere. In Denmark, very little is known about the existence of the Faroese krone, mainly the fact that it is officially the same currency as the Danish krone, and they can be exchanged for free at a Danish bank. Therefore, a very small number of Danish stores will agree to accept them. People traveling from the Faroes to Denmark are often advised to exchange cash before departure to prevent unwanted situations.
On March 19, 2012, a new series of banknotes was introduced into circulation, which differs from the banknotes of the 2001-2005 series only in slightly changed forms of the degrees of protection, but the general design of the banknotes has not been changed. Banknotes of different issues will be in parallel circulation. Faroese kronor banknotes are printed in the securities factories of the Danish Mint.
In early August 2009, the Faroe Islands applied for the introduction of the euro.
