The South Sudanese pound is the currency of South Sudan. Presented on the day of the declaration of independence of the Republic of South Sudan on July 9, 2011. The initial release was planned for July or August 2011. On July 19, the new currency was officially introduced into circulation in the country. The rate of the South Sudanese pound was equated to the pound of the Republic of Sudan.
On July 19, 2015, coins in denominations of 10, 20 and 50 piastres minted in South Africa were introduced into circulation. On July 19, 2016, bimetallic 1 and 2 pound coins were released.
