The Somaliland Shilling is the official currency of the self-proclaimed Republic of Somaliland, de facto independent since 1991. The currency was introduced on October 18, 1994 at the rate of one shilling = 100 Somali shillings. The circulation of the Somali shilling as the official currency of Somaliland was discontinued on January 31, 1995. It currently continues to function as a domestic currency. In main circulation Banknotes in denominations of 500, 1000 and 5000 shillings of various years of issue.
In November 2000, the Somaliland shilling rate was 4550 shillings to one US dollar. Unofficial exchange rates ranged between 4000 and 5000 shillings per US dollar. As of February 2007, the official exchange rate of the Somaliland Central Bank was 6000 shillings to one US dollar. The unofficial rate is between 6000 and 6500 shillings per US dollar. Closer to 2010, the exchange rate of one US dollar was about 8 Somali shillings.
